Tapioca and sustainability

Ingredion takes the lead in sustainable tapioca

The race to offer consumers more sustainable options and meet corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals has never been greater. Consumers want sustainability — and so do we. That is why we were the first to set an ambitious target of achieving 100% sustainably sourced tapioca by 2025.

Presently, more than half of our tapioca is sustainably sourced, with our next-generation high-performance waxy tapioca reaching 100% sustainability. We accomplish this by working closely with our farmer partners, taking the lead in sustainability by empowering them to develop environmentally friendly practices to ensure the long-term production of sustainable tapioca.

Driving sustainable tapioca agriculture

As a sustainable agriculture leader, Ingredion is proud to be the first Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA)-verified sustainable cassava producer in Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

To drive environmental and social impact in our agriculture supply chain, we use the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform’s (SAI Platform) Farm Sustainability Assessment to benchmark our performance against 90 global standards. This allows us to identify and address the unique needs of growers in different regions, and ensures that our programmes are robust, transparent, and aligned with global market expectations for sustainable food production.

Our FSA-verification:

🥇 Gold for regular cassava in 2023

🥈 Silver for waxy cassava in 2023

Sustainability initiatives and expertise

Discover how our efforts in driving sustainable farming bring about benefits for both our farmer partners and the environment.

Improving crop quality

Ingredion is among the first companies to receive and distribute CMD-resistant tapioca varieties from the Thai Tapioca Development Institute (TTDI). CMD, or Cassava Mosaic Virus Disease, can destroy up to 80% of tapioca yields, severely impacting farmer livelihoods. We are addressing this by rapidly disseminating these improved varieties, and promoting their use among our farmer network in Thailand.

Digitalisation efforts

We introduced the Tapioca GrowTH app in Thailand to facilitate open communication and collaboration with our local farmer partners. The app offers various interactive features, including educational content like sustainable farming best practices and tips for efficient raw material delivery. A key goal of this initiative is to support our partners on their journey towards long-term sustainable tapioca farming.

Agribusiness experts

Ingredion actively engages in agricultural events to share our wealth of knowledge and expertise to drive industry progress. From engagement with our farmer partners to industry partners, Ingredion continuously work to advance progress with sustainability initiatives.

Community initiatives

Field safety for our farmer partners is of great importance. We seek to promote safety in agricultural and farming operations from production, storage, handling and delivery of crops among the farmers who supply our raw materials. Other initiatives like fair and ethical trading practices are also practised to support the economic well-being of the communities we partner with.

Sustainability efforts

At Ingredion, we continuously work to advance the progress we make through the lenses of Everyday Life, Planet Life and Connected Life, both for our own sustainability goals and to help our customers meet theirs.

Zero waste

To reduce our social and environmental impact, we've invested in a belt press to extract liquid from tapioca pulp, a co-product of our manufacturing process. This allows us to:

1) Prevent accidents from moist peel spillage,
2) Convert extracted liquid into clean Biogas energy to power manufacturing plants
3) Repurpose dehydrated tapioca peels to value-added animal feed
4) Reduce volume of tapioca pulp by 50% to cut transporation costs and carbon emissions

Renewable energy

We have initiated solar panel installations at our manufacturing facilities to generate renewable energy, with the first phase launching in November 2023 at our Ban Khao Din facility in Rayong, Thailand.

Better measurement on emissions data

Ingredion helped Microsoft in the testing and development of their Cloud for Sustainability software. They continue to work toward better data collection and analytics of carbon emissions, and we are particularly excited about the work being done to help capture and evaluate Scope 3 emissions across our supply chain.
